The Past and Future of Theatric Projection
Wednesday 22 January 2014
Film is still the gold standard origination and projection medium. Film has been the mainstay of the moving image for 130 years and has many advantages - but is being displaced at all parts of the Content value chain by digital electronics.
The vast quantity of film needs to be archived and restored before it degrades further – and with a large number of gauges and image areas means that this is a challenge – and needs both mechanical and electronic techniques.
How can we then project and archive a restored Film – and also all the digital assets we all live with today.
But despite the growth of digital - there are a number of prospects for those who enjoy working with motion picture film - wither “diehard” or those who are just discovering it properties. There are also those who may be making neg stock and many still like mechanical Projection.
So is there the possibility of accommodating proponents of both technologies (chemical and digital) without the necessity for mutual exclusion.
