SMPTE Welcomes Joel Welch as Director of Professional Development
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is pleased to announce that Joel E. Welch has joined SMPTE in the newly created position of Director of Professional Development.
Joel has held technology-related positions since 1977 and possesses a unique mix of technical field experience and professional development (PD) experience, including extensive work creating PD programs using both traditional and non-traditional delivery platforms. He has developed and implemented learning & development (L&D) programs relating to the application of video and RF in an Hybrid Fiber Coax environment and has an extensive background facilitating the simultaneous development of multiple, complex professional development programs utilizing large teams of volunteers.
His 30-year career includes eight years broadband field experience working for one of North America's largest cable telecommunications companies and 22 years in technical learning & development leadership positions in the U.S. and Australia. Most recently, as Director, Program Development and Certification at a cable telecommunications engineering association, Joel successfully led the development of numerous technical and engineering professional development programs, including the association's technical workshop program presented at its annual engineering conference, which typically draws 10,000+ attendees.
Joel is a member of the American Society of Training & Development (ASTD), the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), and is also an active participant in several L&D, OD and technology-related online discussion forums.
Joel graduated from Southern Maine Technical College in South Portland, Maine and has completed independent professional studies in organization development and transition at the College for Lifelong Learning in Portsmouth, NH. Recently, Joel attended Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania and became certified to instruct curriculum as part of Cisco Systems highly-coveted CCNA Certification Program.
