White Plains, NY, 27 March 2012 – The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) today announced that Prof. Dr. Albert Heuberger, the executive director of Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS (Fraunhofer IIS), a leading contract research and development institute that focuses on microelectronic systems and devices as well as information and communication technologies, will join a distinguished panel of industry leaders to discuss powerful and cost-effective new-media technology enablersat the SMPTE Forum on Emerging Media Technologies, an executive-level symposium to be held by the Society 13 – 15 May in Geneva and produced in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Prof. Dr. Heubergerwill take part in The Forum panel “Delivering The Future,” which will focus on identifying and leveraging key technology enablers – such as digital compression, IP-based content distribution and mobile delivery networks as well as UHDTV, next-generation S3D, and cloud storage – that are also sound investments.
Fraunhofer IIS is recognized for its research programs into microelectronics, information technology, telecommunications, audio and multimedia technology, digital radio, digital cinema, RF technology, satellite navigation, medical engineering, logistics, imaging systems, and mechanical and industrial automation. Its researchers also develop wireless communication systems, particularly digital broadcasting systems, as prototypes ready to go into commercial production. And it primarily developed the MP3 standard for digital audio coding that is used worldwide.
“With so much available technology – and more arriving every day – media enterprises need to pinpoint confidently the solutions that will drive their future growth, thus the insights provided by Prof. Dr. Heuberger will be critically important to our attendees,” said David Wood of the EBU and the chair of the symposium’s program committee. “We’re delighted to have him at The SMPTE Forum.”
Other executive presenters at The SMPTE Forum include those from ATSC, BSkyB, Cisco, EBU, Ericsson, Grass Valley, IBM, MPEG, NHK, Radio Bremen, Radio Television Hong Kong, Screen Digest, Singapore Media Development Authority, Sony, the Sports Video Group, Technicolor, Warner Bros., and zeebox.
The SMPTE Forum on Emerging Media technologies is the only symposium to bring together leading motion-imaging technologists, researchers, scientists, practitioners, manufacturers, and strategic thinkers. Over the course of two days, it will provide a science-based, non-commercial opportunity for executives and other senior leaders from the broadcast, broadband, and cinema industries to discuss the most important and innovative research taking place over the next 10-15 years, with a particular focus on technologies likely to come to market within the next three years. All in an environment designed for easy networking.
Program and registration information for The Forum is available at www.smpteforum.org. Regular updates will also be available via Twitter @forum2012.
